The day of parting at the airport, the old father said to his daughter who was about to go abroad: 'I wish you enough'.
Every time I have to go through a difficult challenge in life, I often go to the city airport to see people say "goodbye", to see that I am still happy when I do not have to say goodbye to my loved ones. When I see people clinging, holding each other and crying... I feel that I still have many precious things.
Once, I happened to witness the separation of a father and daughter. The images of them together in their last moments are still imprinted in my mind until now.
At that time, the father - an old man with grey hair and trembling hands tightly hugged his little daughter:
- I love you. I wish you enough.
The daughter – probably over 30 years old – smiled slightly and replied to her father:
– Dad, I love you too. And I wish you enough.
Dad, I love you. Dad, I wish you enough.
Then the daughter left. Every few steps, she turned around and waved goodbye to her father. The father kept looking after her. Until his daughter was completely gone, I still saw him standing there, his eyes blurred. Perhaps he wanted to cry and needed to cry. I approached him but did not want to interrupt his private moment, so I remained silent. Suddenly he turned to greet me and said:
– Have you ever said goodbye to someone knowing that you might never see them again?
– Excuse me, sir, may I ask, did you just say goodbye to your daughter? Why?
– I am old and my child lives halfway around the world…
The father pondered for a while and then continued:
– I know, the next time she comes back here, I might be gone.
My throat suddenly felt something choked up, I tried to continue the conversation with him normally:
– When I said goodbye to my daughter, I heard you say: “I wish you enough”. May I ask what that means?”
The old father smiled:
– That is my family’s “traditional” wish, passed down through many generations.
He stopped, looked up as if trying to remember every detail and smiled even more brightly.
– When I said: “I wish you enough”, I wanted to wish my daughter a life full of good things and to maintain it.
Then he mumbled:
I wish you enough sunlight to keep your soul pure.
I wish you enough happiness to keep your spirit alive.
I wish you enough pain to appreciate even the smallest joys.
I wish you enough of what you want to be satisfied with life.
I wish you enough loss to appreciate what you have.
I wish you enough sadness to know what happiness is
I wish you enough strength to overcome your weak moments
I wish you enough coldness to know what warmth is
I wish you enough shyness to know what confidence is
I wish you enough misfortune to know that luck is still around you.
I wish you enough courage to face the challenges ahead
I wish you enough happiness to love those who are not as happy as you
And…
I wish you enough greetings to be able to overcome the final “goodbye”.
Finally, he cried and turned away.
I said to him:
– Sir, I wish you enough.
And I wish you enough too.
