 A Tree and Its Fruit

 “No good tree bears bad fruit, nor does a bad tree bear good fruit.  Each tree is recognized by its own fruit. People do not pick figs from thorn bushes, or grapes from briers. A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.

The Wise and Foolish Builders

“Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say? As for everyone who comes to me and hears my words and puts them into practice, I will show you what they are like. They are like a man building a house, who dug down deep and laid the foundation on rock. When a flood came, the torrent struck that house but could not shake it, because it was well built.  But the one who hears my words and does not put them into practice is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. The moment the torrent struck that house, it collapsed and its destruction was complete.” Luke 6:43-49

To live according to Jesus' teaching in Luke 6:43-49, we must focus on transforming our inner heart and anchoring our life in active obedience. This passage, which concludes the Sermon on the Plain, lays out two clear requirements for daily Christian living:

 Guard and Cultivate our Heart (The Tree and its Fruit)

Jesus explains that a tree is strictly known by the fruit it produces. A good tree cannot produce bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot produce good fruit.

Our external actions and words are simply the "fruit" of what is stored inside us. To live right, we cannot just fake external behaviors; we must fill the "treasure chest" of our heart with goodness, truth, charity, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, generosity, gentleness, faithfulness, modesty, self-control, and chastity. What fills our heart will naturally overflow into how we speak and treat others.

 Move Beyond Words to Action (The Two Builders)

Jesus asks a sobering question: 

"Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I tell you?"  

A lifestyle of true obedience like building a house with a deeply dug rock foundation.

True faith requires action, not just verbal agreement. Merely listening to sermons or reading scripture is not enough. To survive the inevitable "floods" and crises of life—like grief, loss, or hardship we must actively practice and apply Jesus' words to our relationships, whenever and wherever we go on the road to the Father’s Home.

•  Let me know You, and let me know myself. Know You to listen to Your Word, and put it into practice in my daily life. Know me to change my path to Your righteous one, to have Heaven in my heart, and You are always with me.
